BACKGROUND
The CALIPSO International Symposium on Spaceborne Lidar will highlight the value of spaceborne lidars and their synergy with other observations (e.g., A-Train satellite constellation or geostationary satellites) for understanding processes that influence climate, weather, air quality and other benefits to society. The symposium will focus on the understanding of aerosols and clouds’ properties and impacts. Emphasis is on accomplishments enabled by such missions as CALIPSO, ICESAT, and AEOLUS, as well as the new opportunities offered by EarthCare, AOS and other future missions.
We delve into the questions “How have spaceborne aerosol/cloud lidar observations advanced our understanding of climate, weather and air quality ? How have these measurements aided society’s near term needs (e.g., weather and air quality forecasting)?” As 2024 sees the transition from the 17 year CALIPSO mission and the scheduled launch of EarthCare later in this spring, this workshop offers an opportunity to reflect on what has been learned and what questions and capabilities the next generation of spaceborne lidars can help answer.
